Our next guest on the WB in -- Bob Bennett chancellor emeritus New York State Board of Regents were talking about the search for the next buffalo school superintendent. Bob good morning. It Bob when you Pamela brown it was a priority of the majority on a school board and to hire a black superintendent. Shouldn't that be a factor should race be a factor this time. Well race is always a subtle factor but I don't think so in this case I think you have to. Make sure you find the most qualified person. Preferably from New York State preferably from Western New York. That understand the local. Economy in the region and all of the players in buffalo and Erie county that could have an impact wanna have an impact. I'm compelled to correct Georgia there that I haven't got involved with Campbell Brown from the beginning. I broader culmination extranet day with every team member down there and monthly meeting to a certain policy cancel them. So I think George need to stand corrected that and I wonder if I may. Bob the back on the subject of a black schools superintendent. Some of the some of the critics say that a white superintendent. Cannot. Understand. The socio economic conditions that exist in Buffalo's African American community and they can't understand that. It's very difficult for them to understand the students and how to teach the students you don't agree with that. I don't agree that -- all why would we assume. That a white person wouldn't understand social economic condition of any group. And that's an insult I think and America -- I think that. In NATO leaders and understand what teaching and learning at all about what good school leadership is all about. And therefore -- source. That children mostly minority in this case have a sound basic education which at the moment they're not receiving. Have you any thoughts on why there's been such a high turnover rate with buffalo superintendents. I don't really know why except that that I think and now we have to make sure that the focuses on school data. And what's the state can do to help what the federal government can do to help and what community agencies can do to help. And have an intense focus on each school. As to what's going and who's the leader of that school. -- teaching that's going man and get away from the blame game you know when all else fails blame the state. Bob do you think -- the next school superintendent should be someone who really understands. The buffalo community and to get right down to ensure that person be from this area. Well I definitely think the person should be from this area. And understand the ins and outs -- urban education for sure. And it all comes down to what kind of quality leadership -- in key positions. Like special education transportation. Principal evaluations and the engagement labor relations and then party and make sure that this person has the freedom. -- over the highest qualified people for the children of this community. One of the names suspend mentioned as a possible candidate for superintendent is Donald -- from Erie -- policies. Do you have any thoughts on what kind of candidate he would be. I can't weigh in on any individuals or not but I don't have a vote but I work was done in the past I know he is an extraordinary leader and nobody really understands. Career aspirations is a special needs so. The board has played major major. Important challenge system is their most important decision I was saying and I'm hopeful that we'll get asked -- very soon. Bob we're glad you could join us this morning thank you for the -- That's Bob Bennett chancellor emeritus New York State Board of Regents.
